A split is made to reduce the size of a colony of honey bees, thus decreasing the chance of a swarm, while also increasing the number of hives in an apiary. In northern Nevada, a split is usually made in April or May from a hive that is healthy and strong. Hosted by Lindsay Chichester, Extension Educator – Douglas County, Nevada, and Del Barber, Master Beekeeper and Douglas County Beekeeping mentor.
