Use of mercury in mining 125 years ago continues to impact waterfowl populations: Implications for current artisanal gold mining
Legacy mercury from historic gold mining continues to expose wildlife in Nevada’s Carson River. Using archived wood duck feathers, we show that high-flow years mobilize buried mercury and increase exposure through aquatic plants and invertebrates, posing lasting ecological and human health risks.
