Summary

As a Nevada resident for over 25 years, Cherry developed a keen understanding of the fragile Mojave Desert and enjoys hiking and exploring. Since becoming a certified Master Gardener in 2007, Cherry contributed almost 1,000 volunteer hours with the program in Pahrump, including over 350 CE (Continuing Education) hours.

During employment at Extension in Pahrump 2016-2017, Cherry hosted the Master Gardener Training course, the Grow Your Own, Nevada! evening classes and the annual Pruning Workshop, with hands-on demonstration.

Cherry enjoys sharing her wealth of horticultural knowledge with the public and encourages others to grow their own vegetables and fruit and has a special affinity for landscape design, with the desert conditions in mind.

Past employment roles in customer service, bookkeeping, payroll, human resources, purchasing, sales and all the other in-between parts of business and commerce make Cherry a welcome addition to the Extension office in Pahrump.

Desert Demonstration Garden

Extension's Pahrump Master Gardener Volunteers maintain the Desert Demonstration Garden, which features landscape and fruit trees, shrubs and plants suitable for the Mojave Desert climate, plus seasonal vegetable beds to show what you can grow to feed yourself and your family. The garden is free and open to the public.

Southern Nye County 4-H Youth Programming

Southern Nye County 4-H serves youth with many clubs and activities at the 4-H Annex at 1651 E. Calvada Blvd. Other activities are offered in the communities of Amargosa, Beatty, and Pahrump and also online via Zoom.

Accomplishments

Master Gardener certification obtained 2007 and maintained Active status to date, with almost 1000 volunteer hours including over 350 CE (continuing education) hours.

Hosted Master Gardener Training Class series Fall 2016 and Grow Your Own Spring 2016 series of evening classes.  Taught the public at Annual Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop (2012-2017) with hands-on demonstration utilizing open-center pruning technique, as learned from and practiced at the UNR Extension Research Center and Demonstration Orchard, North Las Vegas.

Service

Volunteer Secretary for Pahrump Valley Garden Club 2008-2012, organized Pahrump Valley Garden Club's 6th Annual Landscape Tour 2010, awarded Special Certificate of Achievement for this popular community event.  Served as Pahrump Master Gardeners Farmers Market Manager 2012 season.
