Abstract
The neuroendocrine system represents an interface between the brain and the rest of the body, and is involved in the regulation and timing of development, physiology and behavior. A main regulator of the neuroendocrine system, besides homeostatic and developmental processes, is the circadian clock.
In this chapter, we first provide an overview of the molecular and cellular organization of the clock system that consists of a central clock in the brain and peripheral clocks in various other tissues. Then, with a focus on Drosophila, we review our current knowledge on the behavioral and developmental functions of clock-controlled neuroendocrine signaling as well as the underlying mechanisms and neuronal and hormonal circuits.
