Extension's 4-H STEM/STEAM Program in Clark County is part of our nationally recognized 4-H Youth Development Program.

Through hands-on, inquiry-based learning, youth in the program explore STEM and STEAM, integrating science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts to build creativity, problem-solving and essential life skills.

Guided by the National 4-H STEM initiative and the Beyond Ready framework, our program aligns with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and engages youth in real-world challenges through collaboration and scientific practices. The program's offerings are designed to be accessible and inclusive to southern Nevada communities.

Main topic areas

4-H youth holds up a glass test tube with small fish and observes it while outside on grass and near a pond.

Environmental, agricultural and animal science

Programs introduce youth to environmental, agricultural and animal science fields through real-world, inquiry-based learning experiences that connect science concepts to careers and community needs. Youth explore ecosystems, food and agricultural systems, and animal care while applying scientific reasoning, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Through outdoor learning experiences, camps, fairs and hands-on projects, youth gain exposure to career pathways in these fields and build the knowledge and confidence needed to be beyond ready for future education and workforce opportunities.

Technology, robotics and computer science

Programs introduce youth to technology, robotics and computer science through hands-on learning experiences that build logical reasoning, sequencing and problem-solving skills. Projects include robotics clubs and competitions, as well as activities offered through in-school programs, after-school settings, workshops and camps, where youth work in partnership with peers to design, program and control devices. Through these experiences, youth gain confidence using technology while developing skills that support future education and career pathways in technology and engineering fields.

Engineering, design and physical sciences

Programs engage youth in engineering and physical science concepts through hands-on design challenges that explore forces, motion, energy and structures. Youth build, test and refine models using the engineering design process, strengthening problem-solving skills, creativity, collaboration and persistence. Through these experiences, youth develop an understanding of how scientific principles are applied to real-world challenges and careers in technical and applied science fields.

Integrated STEAM

Through integrated STEAM experiences, youth combine science, technology, engineering and mathematics with the arts and literacy to support creativity, innovation and critical thinking. Programs emphasize crosscutting concepts such as patterns, cause and effect, structure and function, and systems, helping youth make meaningful connections across disciplines. By incorporating literacy, art and design, these experiences foster communication, self-expression and collaboration while encouraging youth to approach problems with creativity and an interdisciplinary mindset.
