Elgeberi, N., Copp, C., M., Spears 2025, AI as a Catalyst for Qualitative Research: Reconciling Analytical Innovation with Ethical Responsibility, American Evaluation Association

This interactive, 60-minute skill-building workshop introduced evaluators to practical, accessible applications of artificial intelligence (AI) for qualitative analysis and reporting. While tools like ChatGPT are generating widespread interest, many applied and community-based evaluators remain unsure of how to integrate them effectively. This session demonstrated how AI can assist with summarizing responses, identifying themes, and drafting narrative sections—without replacing human interpretation. Participants engaged in real-time exercises using sample data and learn prompt strategies they can apply to their own work. AI can reduce the time and effort needed to organize qualitative data, freeing evaluators to focus on meaning and use. These efficiencies are especially valuable in time-sensitive contexts where rapid insights are essential. By lowering technical barriers, AI tools support more inclusive evaluation practices that elevate stakeholder voices. Attendees left the session with hands-on experience, adaptable techniques, and a clearer understanding of how to use AI thoughtfully and effectively.
