Basic or Routine Biosecurity Planning
Basic or Routine Livestock Biosecurity
Routine biosecurity is a cornerstone of livestock production systems (including poultry) to maintain food safety and security, protect the environment, and facilitate continuity of business by protecting animals and animal products (USDA APHIS NAHEMS Guidlines: Biosecurity 2016). As a producer this is your responsibility, and your best option to prevent and reduce the risk of disease in your operation. Besides protecting the health of your livestock, routine operational biosecurity is crucial for containing disease during a foreign animal disease outbreak. Routine biosecurity programs will be insufficient to obtain movement permits during a foot and mouth disease outbreak, that will require an approved enhanced biosecurity plan.
The following links provide information and resources to help producers develop basic or routine biosecurity programs, information about industry quality assurance and certification programs, and best management practices for development and implementation of effective routine biosecurity programs.
