Nevada Food & Agribusiness Glossary

Understanding our regional food networks requires clear terminology. This brief glossary outlines core infrastructure, programs and state initiatives helping shape Nevada's agricultural landscape.

USDA Food Hub: A business or organization that actively manages the aggregation, distribution and marketing of source-identified food products primarily from local or regional producers to strengthen their ability to satisfy wholesale, retail and institutional demand.

Value-Added Products: Agricultural goods that have been altered physically or processed in a way that enhances their value (such as turning local fruits into jams or milk into cheese), expanding profitability margins for small- to mid-scale producers.

Food Bank vs. Food Pantry: A Food Bank is a large-scale, centralized warehousing facility that collects, stores and distributes bulk food to food security organizations. A Food Pantry is a localized, public-facing distribution site where individual families directly receive groceries.

Gleaning: The traditional practice of harvesting leftover crops from farmers' fields, orchards or home gardens that would otherwise go to waste, redirecting fresh, nutritious food directly to local community hunger relief programs.

Nevada SBDC: The Nevada Small Business Development Center provides free, confidential counseling, technical data and specialized business planning assistance to entrepreneurs and ag-producers across the state.
