About the Certificate Program

The University of Nevada, Reno Extension Urban & Indoor Agriculture Lab developed the Hydroponic Crops Production Certificate Course to teach commercial growers, educators, home gardeners, Master Gardeners and anyone interested in hydroponic systems and soil-free plant cultivation.

The course consists of readings, lectures and hands-on training from experts in urban horticulture.

Participants will learn innovative hydroponic techniques, resource-efficient growing methods and practical strategies to maximize yields in controlled environments.

Course facility

Participants in the hydroponics course will have access to Extension’s research facility, where they can experience firsthand the three hydroponic systems in action: nutrient film technique, deep water culture and aeroponics. 

They'll gain hands-on expertise in:

  • Hydroponic systems design and management
  • Plant nutrition, pH balancing and nutrient solutions
  • Environmental controls, including light, temperature, humidity and airflow
  • Pest and disease prevention strategies
  • Harvesting, food safety and post-harvest handling

Course details

The course is offered in person at University of Nevada, Reno Extension's office in North Las Vegas (2280 N. McDaniel St.).

The certificate course costs $100. The program's funds include course materials and staff support. Participants will be recommended to purchase additional reading resources independently.

Master Gardeners who wish to work with the Hydroponics Program must complete this class as part of the requirements for Advanced Certification in Hydroponics.
