The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is a federally funded grant program. SNAP-Ed is evidence-based and helps people make their SNAP dollars stretch, teaches them how to cook healthy meals, and lead physically active lifestyles.

The goal of SNAP-Ed in Nevada is to improve the nutritional well-being of people who receive SNAP benefits and other Nevadans with a low income through community based education, programs and needs assessments.

We work with the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that people who receive SNAP benefits learn how to best use them to purchase foods that will provide the most nutritious choices and the greatest value. Nationally and in Nevada, SNAP-Ed programs have proven to be worth the investment. In Nevada, SNAP-Ed funds help support several of our educational programs designed to teach good nutrition and the importance of exercise to Nevada families.

Early Childhood

Children need nutritious food to grow, thrive, and succeed in school. UNR Extension collaborates with early care and childhood education sites, such as schools, daycares and learning centers. We implement a variety of programs throughout Nevada that focus on early childhood. We aim to encourage children to adopt healthy behaviors by engaging them in evidence-based activities. We also train those that work with children to implement curricula, and provide resources such as recipes, handouts and tip sheets.

For information about early childhood activities, visit the UNR Healthy Kids Resource Center.

Youth

SNAP-Ed provides engaging and educational nutrition programs for youth to combat sedentary behavior and low fruit and vegetable consumption. We offer various evidence-based direct education programs tailored for different age groups. The programs introduce youth to fruits and vegetables through fun activities, tastings, and hands-on lessons. Our programs integrate physical activity, smart food choices, and real-life skills to help youth stay healthy without it feeling like a chore.
